Evelynne StewartWeb Designer and Developer
When did you first become interested in web design?
My interest actually developed as I learned it. I got started while working for a professor at my Alma Mater, during college. He had been given the task, by administration, of constructing a website on which to host the various academic and other articles of one of the founding faculty. The project ended up being mostly scanning and OCR work, (hundreds of articles!). The part that was interesting to me, though, was learning to put the articles on the website, and helping to design the way everything looked. It was this experience that eventually qualified me for the interview that got me a job with Elegant Peak.
How did you become part of the team at Elegant Peak?
During my senior year of college, the career development department, which helps students find and prepare for careers after college, put on a career fair. Alumni from numerous industries were invited to give presentations on what to expect in the prep for and day-to-day work of their respective jobs. Funnily enough, I actually missed the presentation by the IT and Computer Services group. I was interested in learning a bit about it though, so I went to speak with them after the presentations were over. I mentioned, during the following conversation, that I had a little bit of website back-end experience. Nathan, who was one of the alumni giving the presentation, offered me his card, and called me a couple of weeks later to offer me an interview! I’ve been a part of the team since January of 2017.
What’s your favorite part about working here?
That’s a tough one to narrow down, since this is probably the nicest job I’ve ever had, and I’ve done quite a few different things. The team is a huge part of the experience of course, and this one is made up of some of the friendliest professionals I’ve ever met.
As for the work itself, I have come to love design! My favorite part of a project is helping a new client figure out fonts and a color scheme for a new website, and playing around with the layout. Getting a new line of CSS to work is always a triumphant moment, (and makes me feel smart, haha!). I never would have thought wire-framing sounded fun, but now I find it incredibly satisfying to take a sketched layout and turn it into a beautiful, functional website! I’ve always enjoyed making things that DO something, things that perform work. Web design gives me the opportunity to do that with something that also looks beautiful and actually contributes to someone’s livelihood by promoting their business.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I run sometimes…
…but certainly not every day. I really enjoy music, of most genres and time-periods, and have some playing almost nonstop. I’m also trying to get back into reading books (college almost killed that joy for me, but it’s coming back). On warm, sunny days, I like taking my Mini Cooper S out to the countryside, and exploring winding back-roads. (Coopers corner very well, in case you didn’t know, so sharp turns are that much more exciting! Add a supercharger, and you have a recipe for fun!) There are various outdoor activities I enjoy, but don’t do often, such as hiking, swimming, and climbing. I love spending time with my friends when I can. We’re pretty spread out, so it can be tricky to arrange, but when we can it’s a blast!
Which project was most satisfying for you to work on?
I’ve done so many at this point that picking one is difficult. When we launched twinairllc.com, they began receiving service requests via the contact form on the website immediately; I found that extremely satisfying. With jenspirations.com, I didn’t have a lot of design direction or content to work with, so I had to do a lot of guessing and go with my gut. The client ended up being absolutely thrilled with the way everything looked, so I knew I had done a good job. When the client is happy, I’m happy.
Why do you think clients should choose to work with Elegant Peak?
Most business owners I talk to express concerns about not knowing enough about what we’re doing for them, and they have horror stories of web agencies taking their money and running, without delivering satisfactory service, if any. We are here to provide peace-of-mind for our clients. We hold ourselves accountable to them for delivering the service we’ve promised, and we’re genuinely invested in seeing their businesses succeed. I think that the kind of personable, client-oriented service we provide is unique, especially in our industry, and is definitely something that people are looking for. If you want to work with someone you can trust, you’re not going to find a better team than the little crowd at Elegant Peak!
